Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization, founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families to improve their literacy skills.
Labourer-Teachers work as paid manual labourers during the day on farms in South Western and Central Ontario. In addition to the physical work, they volunteer their time to provide educational and recreational opportunities for their co-workers who are predominantly migrant farm workers from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
We are seeking mature and dedicated individuals looking for challenging and rewarding summer job opportunities and who possess a keen interest in literacy and teaching as well as community development work to fill the positions of Labourer-Teachers in the Frontier College Labourer-Teacher program for 2012.
Overall Accountability
Labourer-Teachers are employed by growers in Ontario and volunteer for Frontier College to provide educational and recreational opportunities for workers in their volunteer time. Through the Labourer-Teacher program, Frontier College is accountable to the Government of Ontario to ensure that farm workers further develop their literacy and work skills.
You will work independently and report to the Labourer Teacher program staff. There are also a small number of Literacy Outreach positions based in Leamington. As a Labourer-Teacher, you will represent Frontier College in your designated community. Most farms employ only one Labourer Teacher.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Employed as a labourer by farmer
- Provide educational and recreational opportunities for migrant farm workers in Central and Southwestern Ontario
- Work with farm workers from diverse backgrounds to help them develop their literacy and work skills
- Conduct learner assessments and complete all necessary program reporting
Skills and Attributes
- Some post-secondary education
- Teaching/Tutoring experience
- Experience with community development and volunteer organizations
- Background in physical labour/relevant physical pursuits; farm positions are physically challenging and usually require some heavy lifting and repetitive motion
- Ability to live and work closely with others, especially in multicultural settings. Farmer/employer provides housing where male LT’s share bunk houses with other workers. Female LT’s will be provided separate rooming by the farmer.
- Ability to live and work in rural Ontario
- Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills; high level of maturity
- Demonstrated ability to work to high standards without daily supervision and to take initiative; most farmers employ only one Labourer- Teacher.
Additional Assets
- Ability to drive is helpful but not mandatory
- Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not mandatory
Compensation:
- Current agricultural wage of $10.25 per hour. The Labourer-Teacher Program assists participants with travel costs.
- Long hours mainly during the summer (May to Labour Day); Up to 12 hours per day in peak season, 6 to 7 days per week. Positions may be available in the fall.
- Housing is provided by employer.
